The CYMT (www.cymt.org) recruits partner churches where our graduate residents serve as youth ministers while in our program. Last night at a partner church recruitment meeting at a church, I was asked something that I’m asked at probably 50% of these meetings.
Will they (our youth minister) be musically gifted? Because kids love music you know.
I shared my typical response which is some play guitar and some don’t; but that is not what makes them a good youth minister or not. If they don’t, then its an opportunity to empower a youth or someone with those gifts in the church.
Then, I took a bit of homemade chocolate chip cookie and was divinely inspired to say, “You know kids love to eat, but we don’t ask youth ministers if they can cook before we hire them.”
Brillent! What are you asking your youth minister to do that someone else in the church could be doing? What are you doing because you are expected to do it that you need to let go?
You let other people cook. Let other people ….
Eat a chocolate chip cookie and think about it!

I’m a musician and a youth minister, but my kids don’t really like to sing. So, I rarely use this talent. I do cook for them quite often, though.
